Over at GameSetWatch, guest writer and psychologist Jamie Madigan wrote an interesting piece about the common dilemma facing players of online multiplayer games; to cheat, or not to cheat?

The basic conceit that players have to consider whether or not to perform exploitative glitches in a multiplayer environment where cheaters gain the upper hand is nothing new, but seeing it expressed in psychological terms is certainly interesting. I could complain about his interchangeable use of “cheater” and “glitcher” in some instances, but I think it’s OK to let this one slide.

Here’s a sample from the article that refers to the infamous “javelin glitch” in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

But in the meantime, the javelin glitch presented players with an interesting dilemma assuming they weren’t outright bent on griefing: they could either abuse the glitch to boost their own rankings and unlock new perks, or they could abstain and preserve the game’s fair play. Of course, the problem is that if they abstain, someone else may abuse the glitch and dominate the match. The middle ground is when everyone glitches, but the resulting pandemonium isn’t as much fun as fair play.

Yeah, that’s the best I could come up with. Brad Nicholson at Destructoid reports that a game-ending bug in the Xbox 360 port of Risen has reared its ugly head in the third chapter of the game. What’s even worse is that this bug had been reported back in 2009 when the game was out for PC. You’d think the developers would try and fix something like that… right? From the article:

In the third chapter in the game, your no-longer-shoeless adventurer will have to face the dangers of the Volcano Keep in order to do the whole “save the world” thing. In the process, though, you may hit a glitch so bad that you’ll have to restart the game. Take our advice: when prompted by the voodoo man, it’s best to go right instead of left first. Going left first means two quest items (busts) won’t spawn and thus you can’t complete the next two chapters.

In “Leftover glitching,” GlitchBlog takes a look at great but overlooked glitches from the past.

In this second edition of “Leftover glitching” we have another glitch from forum member TI2ophy, who in May 2008 discovered a pretty ingenious loading glitch in the PC version of Dreamfall: The Longest Journey.

By interrupting his forward movement by pausing the game, TI2ophy is able to bypass the loading trigger that would normally load the next area of the map. This technique affords him some pretty incredible exploration opportunities that you really just have to see for yourself.

I’ve always wondered whether or not a glitch like this would work in another game; I haven’t see anything like it since, but that definitely doesn’t rule out the possibility of this kind of glitch coming up in some other game down the line.

Here are the words: achievement glitch (n), elevator glitch (n), pop-up glitch (n), rocket jump (v), skydive (v), and under the level (n).

I also updated the definitions for crash and game-ending glitch. Be sure to check out the Glitchwords page for all the wonderful glitching definitions!
