The fine folks at Destructoid have written about three new patches for popular games that are either here already or coming very soon.

A patch for Heavy Rain is coming soon that will fix the freezing issues people were having, among other things. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Aliens Vs Predator will also be updated soon; this patch will primarily be to make “weapon tweaks and [provide] faster matchmaking.” Finally, the PC version of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 has just received a patch that fixes a whole array of minor issues in the game.

It’s nice to see these games are getting fixed up!

Update 3/23: It appears the PC version of Aliens Vs Predator has also received a new patch.

Yeah, that’s the best I could come up with. Brad Nicholson at Destructoid reports that a game-ending bug in the Xbox 360 port of Risen has reared its ugly head in the third chapter of the game. What’s even worse is that this bug had been reported back in 2009 when the game was out for PC. You’d think the developers would try and fix something like that… right? From the article:

In the third chapter in the game, your no-longer-shoeless adventurer will have to face the dangers of the Volcano Keep in order to do the whole “save the world” thing. In the process, though, you may hit a glitch so bad that you’ll have to restart the game. Take our advice: when prompted by the voodoo man, it’s best to go right instead of left first. Going left first means two quest items (busts) won’t spawn and thus you can’t complete the next two chapters.

What’s up with all these Sony bugs lately? First Dante’s Inferno, then Heavy Rain, and now the entire PlayStation 3.

Joystiq and just about everywhere else on the internet reported yesterday and today that non-slim PlayStation 3 consoles were no longer playing trophy-supported games or connecting to the PlayStation Network due to a 8001050F error code caused by a glitchy internal clock.

Luckily the issue is resolved now, so have fun playing some games! If you were affected by this bug I suggest taking a look at Joystiq’s FAQ on the fix.

Mike Fahey at Kotaku reports that not all is well in the world of Heavy Rain. According to numerous accounts and discussion in Sony’s PlayStation forums, a bevy of insidious bugs plague the PlayStation 3 title, including “out-of-sync audio, full-on freezes, and unloadable auto-saves.” From the article:

Despite having to download a rather substantial patch on launch day, or perhaps because of it, players in North America and Europe are experiencing glitches with Heavy Rain.

Some, like me, are lucky, only experiencing odd moments of stuttering where the audio and video don’t quite sync.

Others are experiencing more severe issues. Reports of the game locking up at various points are common, and an issue with auto-saves not loading and players having to go back hours in the game to find a working restart point.

Luckily a fix should be coming soon, but for now save often and carry a big stick!

If any of you are playing Dante’s Inferno right now, be careful! A patch is on its way, but for now be sure to make frequent saves in different slots to be safe.

I mentioned this a little while ago in the forums, but this is a nice article from Bitmob user Allistair Everett that discusses how unwanted bugs and glitches can actually be enjoyable. Here’s a snippet from the article:

Sometimes, when the character you’re talking to randomly spawns from the sky and falls to his death, well, that can be a mood breaker in a game like Fallout 3. But it’s also a special sort of fun. The problem is when you go looking for it: You can wait endlessly for lightning to strike twice at the same spot. Sure, Garry’s Mod and Crysis‘ dev tools allow us to manipulate the game to do things we wouldn’t see otherwise, but there is something special about these scenarios happening naturally, without any player input.
